40 Hour Kit: A Million People Who Kind Of Like You

(Here for the subject line? Find it in the πŸ’‘ Entrepreneurial Insight section)

Hey Reader,

What do you think of advice?
In our 40HE Club, I organize sessions for founders to get inspired by other founders. Advice comes up often. And mostly it sounds reasonable and valuable.
However, I think it's one of the hardest parts of building a business and working towards your goals: keeping a balance between taking advice and following your gut feeling.
When do you take advice to heart? When do you go against it and trust your gut? Hit reply and let me know.

And now let's get into your 40 Hour Kit of the week:

πŸ’‘ Entrepreneurial Insight

100 users who love you beat a million who kind of like you.

You don't need big reach. You need a small number of people who'd be sad if you and your business disappeared.

Based on the advice Paul Graham gave the Airbnb founders (co-founder of Y Combinator).

βš–οΈ Balance Hack

Do you know the feeling of being overwhelmed and feeling anxious about all the To-Dos on your list? Next time, pause for a minute and ask the following questions:

1. What can I let go of?
2. Where is 'good enough' actually good enough?
3. What do I really need to know? What truly deserves my attention?

Run this technique over today's To-Do list and notice how you regain your confidence and proactivity.

Inspired by the 'white space' pause in 'A Minute to Think' by Juliet Funt (founder of the Juliet Funt Group and a longtime specialist in fighting workplace busyness).

πŸš€ Challenge

Rich Barton grew Zillow with almost no ad budget by building one feature so provocative people couldn't stop talking about it: the Zestimate, a public price estimate on every home. This week, use his framework:

  1. Pick your taboo: Name one thing your industry treats as secret, boring, or "you're not supposed to say that".
For example: real numbers, behind-the-scenes insights, or a strong opinion.
  2. Share it: Publish one post, page, or email that puts that out to the public or your target group.
  3. Add your value: Make sure it provokes and serves the reader.

Based on Rich Barton's 'provocation marketing' playbook (co-founder of Expedia, Zillow, and Glassdoor).

✨ Recommendation

Ever wondered how to communicate your product visions so customers remember and care about them? Best-selling authors Chip and Dan Heath came up with clear traits based on their research on how to make ideas stick:

  1. Simple.
The one core thing. The single sentence a customer could repeat back.
  2. Unexpected.
Break a pattern. Make people stop and pay attention.
  3. Concrete.
Specifics, numbers or images, not abstractions.
  4. Credible.
A reason to believe: a number, a name, a detail only an insider would know.
  5. Emotional.
Make them feel something. We care about people, not statistics.
  6. Stories.
Wrap it in a story so people can remember and retell it for you.

Based on the best-selling book 'Made to Stick' by Chip & Dan Heath.
